Redondo Beach, Calif. - The Body Glove surf and wakes teams are always keeping themselves busy with travel, competitions, photo shoots and just having a good time doing what they do best. As another summer of small surf is coming to and end in Southern California, we look to the team to give us inspiration of places we want to go. July and August 2007 were action packed as usual for the Body Glove crew.
The entire surf world loves Bali. The epic waves, great culture and beautiful beaches are a surfer's and photographer's dream. Team Body Glove packed up in early July and hit up Bali for two weeks of surfing. With samples of Body Gloves new spring 2008 products in hand, Mike Losness, Cheyne Magnusson, Dusty Payne and Holly Beck headed to Indo with filmmaker Greg Browning and photographer Mike Balzer. They scored some sick waves and we have the photos and videos to prove it. Some of the surfing highlights included a full rotation 360 air by Dusty, Cheyne's tail sliding airs and newly acquired t-shirt collection, Mike's session at Dreamland and Holly's surfing at the sandbar at Changu. The non surfing highlights include elephants, monkey forest, great food, culture and friends. Check out the Photos and Video Galleries for more from the trip
The US Open of Surfing came to town at the end of July. Surfer Alex Gray, Bruce Irons, Mike Losness, Holly Beck, Dusty Payne and Granger Larsen all competed in the main event. The most exciting part of the entire event was the PacSun Battle of the Brands. Teams from some of the major brands in the surf industry battled it out in a tag team style event with each team having two pros, one grom and one woman. Team Body Glove consisted of Mike Losness, Alex Gray, Granger Larson and Holly Beck. There were eight different teams competing, Body Glove, Reef, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Billabong, O'Neill, and Lost. The Body Glove team was able to pull off an incredible 2nd place finish in the tag-team style event and looked great in the new Body Glove team wetsuits.
During the US Open of Surfing, Body Glove Wetsuits Team rider Bruce Irons was inducted into the Huntington Beach Surfer's Hall of Fame. Bruce joins a prestigious group of surfers including Duke Kahanamoku, Kelly Slater, Greg Noll, Laird Hamilton, Layne Beachley and Bruce's brother Andy. This year's induction ceremony marked the 10th anniversary of the Surfer's Hall of Fame. Next time you are in Huntington Beach please check out the cement imprints on Main Street.
At the end of July team Body Glove embarked on the 2nd stop of the Global Positioning Tour in Japan. Alex Gray, Mike Losness and Cheyne Magnusson spent a week in Japan scoring some typhoon surf, meeting with friends and fans, eating sushi, and getting themselves in trouble. The GPT tour DVD will be available at the end of the year. There will be more photo and video clips in the future.
August is a quiet time for the Men on the Fosters ASP World Tour and a busy time for the guys trying to make it to the ASP World Tour by competing on the WQS. Bruce Irons (#16) and Luke Stedman (#21) are both on the Fosters ASP World Tour and have had the month off to chill at home or go on photo trips as they get ready for the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, CA beginning on September 9th. Meanwhile WQS warriors Alex Gray, Dusty Payne, Mike Losness and Makua Rothman have been in Europe battling it out in the important European events. They are in the stretch run of big WQS contests and we hope the best for them.
The wake crew absolutely dominated this year on so many levels. On the competition front, Phil Soven edged out fellow Body Glove rider Rusty Malinoski to win the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboarding Tour. The two guys battled all year long and Phil came out on top to earn the $10,000 Indmar Performance Award for the season victory. Rusty got a little revenge by being voted the 2007 Reader's Choice Wakeboarder of the Year by Wakeboarding Magazine.
On the women's side of the tour, Shelby Kantar came from behind at the final tour stop in Portland, OR to win the women's side of the tour. Congrats to all of the wakeboard crew for a great year.
